According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death...
This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy...
— Jerry Seinfeld

Death is a taboo topic. I want to help change that.

There are very few places in western culture where we can freely talk about death without receiving a side eye glance. Even though we will all die, not many people want to talk about it. It is unknown. It is scary. It is “the end”. It is mysterious. Let’s try to take the mystery and fear out of it by having open conversations where we can learn, share, and discuss all things death related.

In the Madbury, NH area, there are now two opportunities to attend group discussions with other like minded people (i.e.: those who want to talk about or normalize death). The Madbury Death Cafe and The Departure Lounge: Conversations for the living and leaving. There are a few subtle differences.

Madbury Death Cafe

A Death Café is a group led discussion about experiences, thoughts, and perspectives about death and dying, held in a safe space with a facilitator (me!) who will ensure that everyone who wants to speak is given the time to do so. There is no advice offered, assigned topics, or guidance shared and the discussions follow guidelines that are universal to Death Cafe’s throughout the United States and world.

They are free to the public.

They are held at the Madbury Public Library, 11 Town Hall Road, Madbury, NH the third Monday of every month from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Cake, tea, coffee and water are served.

The Departure Lounge: Conversations for the Living and Leaving

Although both the Death Cafe and the Departure lounge encourage discussions around death and dying, there are a few subtle differences.

The Departure Lounge gatherings are also a place to visit to discuss death, dying, grief, loss, planning, etc., but they are slightly more casual as they is held at Peace of the Planet (which is in the comfort of my home). There are 2 pre-determined topics ready to discuss and those who attend can also bring a topic that they would like to discuss.

In the Death Cafe, everyone comes with their own experience and there are no “professionals” per se. With the Departure Lounge, everyone also comes with their own experiences and wisdom, but it is lead by a Sacred Death Care Guide, (me) who can lean into some of the soul based perspectives that are overlooked in western culture.

Meetings are held the fourth Thursdays of the month, (barring months where it falls on a holiday) at Peace of the Planet, 12 Fern Way, Madbury, NH. 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

Kindly RSVP so we can create a comfortable space for you.

There is no fee required. Light refreshments will be served.
